Description The Royal Australian Mint was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1965 with the main original aim of producing the new decimal coinage of Australia which was introduced in 1966. It states that it was the first mint in Australia which was not a branch mint of the Royal Mint in London. This refers to the fact that the Perth Mint which opened in 1899 was originally a branch of the Royal Mint. It appears that there is considerable rivalry between these two Australian mints. Both mints compete in the tourist market, and have tours and visits available. | ||||||||||||||||||||
